Interview with Mingzhi "MESSY" Deng (Translated by Mingzhi "MESSY" Deng)

Firstly, I believe that most of the DOA fans in China are very familiar to you. However, there are a lot more PC gamers than TV gamers here, and DOA is not as popular as in other countries. So, just before I start asking you questions, please tell us your DOA experiences and tournaments you have won.

I started playing DOA from many years ago when DOA2 came out. After DOA2U was released I began to play the game competitively and won tournaments both online and offline.

Tournaments have won so far:

UK DOAU online tournament
UK DOA4 online tournament
UK Xleague DOA4 tournament
WCG Asian Championship Runner Up
UK 2007 CGS combine tournament
UK Birmingham OSPL tournament

Now more and more people in China are getting interested in DOA OL, and it is mostly because of the beautiful graphic and sexy characters in the game. Among the PC games, there are merely any game that looks like DOA. The games they usually play are action or FPS games. What do you think is fun in DOA, other than the graphic and characters?

It is definitely the game play. The fighting in DOA is actually deeper than people think. Sure you can get lucky damage once in a while, but you will have to work hard on your game if you want to win consistently, and that's what make people think, and it is the most fun.

We already know that DOA OL is mostly based on DOA2U on the original XBOX. What do you think is the reason that Tecmo wanted to do this? Especially now DOA4 is used for major tournaments.

Personally I think the main reason is most PC we have can't run DOA4 perfectly, and DOA2U is very easy to understand. Since the Chinese DOA online community is just getting started, DOAU can be a good game to build more fans here. Of course I myself prefer the lastest DOA4.

A lot of people want to know when you won your first UK offline tournament, what character did you use and what are your main battle strategy? I believe this can be a hard question to answer.

The character I used was Ryu Hayabusa, and my main strategy was to try to be as offensive as possible, while being safe at the same time.

We asked the same question when we did the interview on the Wuhan Dragon Pro player 2K(Kindfox): How do you think DOA OL can help to attract more people to play DOA? And how can this help DOA become a popular competitive pro level game in China?

I think DOA OL will definitely attract more people to play the game. However at the same time I hope SNDA can sponsor more offline tournaments other than online. The main reason now DOA is popular in the US is because there are many offline tournaments running.

Speaking of 2K, maybe not many DOA new comers know about him. There must be several players that can play the game on a competitve level here. Can you introduce us some of them?

Sure, apart from 2K, there are some decent players: Yefu, Doa77, Yefan, KalaOK, Jeffma, Chenzuops2, Koyasu228 and Wu Liming. I hope they can train themselves to be better.

In the end I'm asking a quesion that most players wanted to know: What do you think people should do to become good at DOA? Or, what do you have to have in order to become a great DOA player?

To be good you need constant training, ideally with pro level players. Also you will need to be calm no matter what happens on stage, concerntrate on your game and of course a little bit of luck.
