The Franchised Snake

On draft day at the 2008 UK/EU Combine, Michael 'ODEE' O'Dell announced Sam 'RattlesnK' Gawn as his Franchise player for the Birmingham Salvo. Sam has proven himself again and again, at the 2007 World Finals and at this year's Combine. Now he leads the Birmingham Salvo into the 2008 World Finals. We have caught up with him and to get a few thoughts about the Combine and the World Finals
First of all, Congratulations on being made the Franchised Player of the Birmingham Salvo, how does that make you feel?
RattlesnK: It’s special because of the hard work and dedication I’ve put into gaming for the last two years, by becoming Birmingham Salvo’s franchise player I feel like I’ve been rewarded for those efforts. It wasn’t all plain sailing to reach this point and in the next few months I’m looking to prove why I deserved to become Salvo’s captain.
There have been a few changes to the Birmingham Salvo team, including your CSS team. You have taken out Ady and Harriman and now have Wez and WilzOOO who was actually playing with you during the Combine, What are your thoughts about these 2 players?
RattlesnK: As individual players they surpass their predecessors completely, both of them can pull a round out of the bag to bring us the win and right now that’s been shown by our results. The addition of these two players has solidified our CSS team as one of the best in the world and on paper we have a powerful line-up to take out to LA. The fact were all long time friends makes heading out to LA that much more special and hopefully together we can reach our goal of becoming individual world champions by the end of July.
You also won the Combine against a lot of tough teams such as Fnatic, Guns 4 Hire. Was there any memorable games for you in this Combine?
RattlesnK: I enjoyed playing against Guns 4 Hire the most, the friendly banter with Luke brought back some fond memories from the past and made the match interesting for the spectators watching behind us.
If I can quote Luke “best awper in the world, your having a laugh” pretty much sums it up until I placed an awp bullet between his eyeballs and began screaming back at him “that’s why I’m number one”.
These are the matches I thrive off as a player, I enjoy the pressure, the banter and particularly a crowd to watch me play. These factors are the catalysts to me performing to my potential and in particular why I love playing in the CGS on stage.

You also have 2 more brand new players, Picaso for Forza 2 and Sarah Lou for Dead or Alive 4 Female. What do you think of them?
RattlesnK: I watched them both compete at the combine and was quietly impressed at their performances under the pressure of becoming drafted. I checked up on the scores of the DOA4 and Forza tournament in particular over the weekend and I’m confident we have picked up two strong additions to our franchise.
After the draft a lot of us had a drink together in a local bar and I got a chance to have a chat with Dean, although we had only just met I found him very easy to talk to and he’s definitely slotted into our team with ease. I didn’t get a chance to talk to Sarah too much after the draft but I’m sure everyone has congratulated her on getting into the CGS and welcomed her into the team.
You have been to the Finals last year, I watched the games and you performed really well with the others so you sorta know what to expect this year. Personally is there anything changed about you from last year that we will see this year?
RattlesnK: I think it’s going to be similar to what everyone saw last year, despite what everyone seems to believe I called the tactics during the 2007 season and will continue to do so for the forthcoming season. The biggest challenge ahead of me is becoming the team’s leading motivator now that Stu has taken a break from gaming and no longer in the team. I’ve got to adapt my attitude and help give encouragement to my team-mates when they need it and also demoralise the other team which is what Stu did so well.

When ODEE announced you as the main player, he said 'Who needs Frod when you've got RattlesnK'? Its known you got a lot of a respect for Frod, would you relish the chance to go against him and why?
RattlesnK: I did originally have a lot of respect for him, but whenever I seem to get mentioned Frod has a comment to make stating how he’s so much better than I am. The fact he’s making comments on gotfrag show’s he’s intimidated so hopefully I’ll get to play against him once I get out to LA.
With the World Finals ahead in a few weeks time, the greatest players in CGS will be on show to do their absolute best to win that half a million. If you got a chance to play any of the CSS teams in CGS right now, who would they be and why?
RattlesnK: I don’t really mind who we play, but I always look forward to playing any of the American teams because it’s so rare that we get the opportunity to play against them. It’s frustrating to be compared to teams who we rarely play and as a player what can be better than beating an American side on their home soil.

Thanks to Sam for his time and I wish him well and the others at this year's final.
