The Way Of The Messy!
Posted by: r2k
Mingzhi 'MESSY' Deng is without a doubt the most intense player on the Birmingham Salvo roster. MESSY trains to be the best and has proven to be the best in Europe by becoming the European Champion, now he turns his attention to the World Finals. I caught up with him to get his views on the past and present.

I'm sure like myself and many others, we didn't know anything about the Dead Or Alive community or much before it took the CGS by storm. From your view, could you tell us how big it really is?
MESSY: I believe the DOA community is still growing very fast and it's global. With the biggest DOA community in the US (around 5000 people), the other places can play the game competitively are: UK, China, Japan and Europe. The UK community is getting bigger and bigger I think because of the CGS on the TV and various tournaments going on here. After the DOA online on the PC be released in August, we'll see another major increase of people playing DOA. So there is actually a lot of people.
What games did you start with before playing Dead or Alive 4?
MESSY: DOA2 and DOA3 of course. Before that I was always interested in fighting games: Street Fighter, KOF series, Soul Calibur etc.
Last year the CGS started up with 4 game announcements which included Dead or Alive 4, how did make you feel when Dead Or Alive 4 was announced?
MESSY: I really wasn't that excited and to tell you a secret: I didn't want to go to the combine last year until some of my good friends told me I should be there to represent the community. So I just went there and then got drafted.
MESSY pre-drafted in the 2007 UK Combine
Sticking with last year, you had a great combine in Birmingham, you won the UK pre-draft final in London and was drafted in Birmingham Salvo but the UK regional finals didn't go so well for you against Paddaman. Could you sum up the UK part of CGS from your perspective.
MESSY: Yeah. During that period of time I wasn't really prepared for the combine and my own DOA style wasn't fully developed. However I can still beat most of the people just because I can play a basic and solid game. There was a bit of luck for Paddaman to win a match against me but I make no excuses, so I make sure this won't happen in future, and in reality I did keep my promises this year.
2007 World Finals, Salvo managed to get 3rd/4th. Your personal record in the Finals was 1-2 where you beat Rio's Snakejorge, came really close against Singapore's Tetra but went heavily down to Chicago's Black Mamba. What did you think of the whole event and what did it mean to you?
MESSY: There were a lot of reasons why I didn't do well last year. My pad was broken right before the match with Snakejorge so I had to use someone else's. I tried to fix the pad however it's not working perfectly anymore through the whole world finals. Also the first match I played Blackmamba a glitch happened where my kick should have hit him but it whiffed for some reason (I think it was the geometry). It left me at a huge disadvantage and then I got grabbed. and I already figured out most of them. The reasons are now irrelevant. What's done is done. I've learned my lessons and I would like to concentrate more on my matches this year.
Apart from the fact that I didn't get the results I wanted last year, I think it was an absolutely great experience because I can compete with the best players from all over the globe. The event was very well organized and the CGS staff are amazing too. I did have fun last year and I'm looking forward to the tournament this year.
ODEE watching MESSY focusing as he takes on Tetra from Singapore Sword
Of course 2008 season is here and ODEE did protect you as one of the 4 protected players for Birmingham Salvo, how does that make you feel?
MESSY: Well first of all it's my own decision to keep winning this year, and then I think ODEE made the smart choice again. He's very intelligent as a manager.
I also know you have been extensively training, which has shown in the OSPlay DOA Tournament where you won and and more importantly the 2008 UK/EU Combine where you not only played UK but EU players also and you won that in style too. What training have you been going through, whats changed from last year to now?
MESSY: Yeah firstly I got a new professional broadband just for playing DOA, though it is still inaccurate online, I can make sure I exchange knowledge with the best players over the world constantly. Secondly I started to organize some offline gatherings with the local DOA players in London. We did that many times and we all got something out of it. Thirdly when I went back to China, I spent half of my time doing DOA only bootcamp with my friends there. They can all play this game very competitively and it was really intensive 2 weeks training. We must have spent more than 10 hours each day playing and researching DOA. Then before the combine I had SkatanMilla come over to my house and we did an offline bootcamp. There's so much, everyday's training is different.
MESSY is protected for CGS Season 2
You also got a new partner in Dead Or Alive 4, that being Sarah Lou. How has it been with her and training together?
MESSY: Sarah has been playing DOA for many years so her "base" knowledge is very good. I think she can be even a lot better than she is now after the training we give her. Again, it's very intelligent for ODEE to pick her.
I'm sure you are currently watching or keeping an eye on the CGS games going on right now in North America, What are your thoughts on the DOA games so far?
MESSY: Actually I didn't spend a lot of time watching other people playing, I was concentrating on my own game. I watched some games and my thoughts were they are good, as always, but not unbeatable. I'm still focusing on my stuff.
The UK final is coming up very fast, are you ready for it?
MESSY: Yeah of course I'm ready, I know what character and strats I'll use. This time you may see something new from me but I'm sure it will work.
A Happy Messy!
Thank you Messy, any shout out to give?
MESSY: Thanks, shout out to ODEE and the whole Salvo Team, my fans and all my DOA fellas(Yeah you know who I'm talking about, it's you!)
